Hey guys, it’s Kate! I wanted to share a journal page project with you today. I had this cute background I liked and this not-so-great piece of art I was playing around with. Despite not loving it as a whole, I thought it could add some interest to another spread or collage. So, I decided to repurpose it and show you a few ideas for breathing new life into your “ugly” art.
The piece was a mix of watercolor and ink, so I grabbed my hole punch and started punching out circle shapes. Once I had a few interesting pieces, I set them aside to work on the background.
I used various colors to add marks and texture to the background, starting with black paint markers for scribbles and geometric shapes. Then, I used a large Posca pen for more marks, creating a high contrast background.
To brighten up the background, I added a thin layer of white paint, and I used flower stencils and blue paint to add some floral elements, blending them into the background.
Next, I mixed yellow ochre with white paint to create a warm yellow hue. I added more circular marks (surprise!) to tie everything together.
With the background complete, I selected some hand-drawn elements from a previous project to add as focal points. I glued them down, along with the punched-out shapes, arranging them to complete the layout.
Finally, I added a handwritten sentiment—”The growth is as important as the harvest”—to the page.
I loved how the page turned out! It was a quick and fun project, and I hope it inspires you to grab some of your old art that you might not like so much, and repurpose it in another creation.
I hope you enjoyed joining me on this creative journey! Until next time, keep creating!
