Hey everyone, Kate here again with another art journal video! I grabbed my sketchbook, but any paper you have lying around will work! Just make sure it can take whatever materials you’re going to put on it. We’re starting with a yellow base, but I decided to tone it down a bit with some gesso using a silicone spreader. Don’t worry about being too neat, just let the gesso flow and add some texture. Lefty or righty, grab your non-dominant hand and give it a go at some swirly marks – it’s surprisingly fun!
To add some contrast, I used burnt umber with a palette knife. Next, we’re warming things up with some sap green. I used a makeup sponge and stencil to create staggered marks that flow outwards towards the edges. Let it dry a bit, and then we can lighten things up!
I mixed some unbleached titanium and green with my palette knife and added more loose green circles. Don’t worry about perfect circles; a little bit of background peeking through is totally fine! We want layers, after all. I let the circles fade out as I went, creating some differentiation.
Now comes the fun part – more circles! This time, I grabbed my brush and some unbleached titanium for softer, lighter circles. Remember to keep those paper edges in mind! I repeated this process on the other page, keeping the paint light and letting it create a cloudy effect. We’re building those layers!
Time for some florals! I used a flat brush to punch in some loose green stems, letting them flow upwards across the page. Then came my favorite filbert brush loaded with dark purple to add some bold lavender accents along the stems.
Leaves were next – simple brush marks were all it took to complete the picture. Highlighting always helps, so I grabbed a stylus tool and some unbleached titanium to add tiny white dots on the lavender flowers for that extra pop.
Finally, the sentiment! I used a stencil and dark purple to add “Thankful” to the perfect spot. And there you have it! A fun, layered art journal page with beautiful textures, colors, and a sweet message.
This was such a fun project, and I hope you enjoyed creating along with me! Grab any paper you have, your paints, and let your creativity flow. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with color. Thanks for watching, and see you next time!
