Hey everyone, it’s Kate here! Today I wanted to play around with some new watercolors I got recently. I grabbed my Marie’s Masters palette and some Artist Loft paper from Michaels.
I decided to do a quick and fun abstract watercolor painting with some doodles on top. I started with a big, loose wash using an Indian red and some peacock blue. I love how these colors work together – the red adds a nice earthy touch that kind of neutralizes the blue in some areas. I threw in some Indigo for some extra depth while the paper was still wet, letting the colors bleed and blend organically.
Once the paint dried, I came back in with some doodles. I used the Indian red again to deepen some areas and create some light and dark contrasts. I love how the brushstrokes pick up the underlying watercolors, creating interesting textures.
Next, I wanted to add a little frame and some details. I used a dry-ish brush technique with Indigo to create a loose frame around the edges. Then, I grabbed a smaller brush to paint some little leaves and sprigs.
After letting everything dry again, I decided the painting needed a little something extra. I pulled out a metallic paint marker and a Gelly Roll pen for some highlights and details. I made some loose, sketchy circles with the gold marker. The pen was perfect for adding sketchy details and highlights to the leaves.
For the finishing touch, I dotted a line of white acrylic paint along the indigo “frame,” adding a bit more definition. I love how the white dots stagger a little, following the edges of the frame.
This whole piece came together so quickly and easily! It was a lot of fun to play around with the watercolors and experiment with different techniques. If you’re looking for a quick and easy watercolor project, I highly recommend giving this a try. The Marie’s Masters watercolors are fantastic – they’re artist quality but at a very reasonable price, and the colors are super rich.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video! Happy creating!
