Hey everyone, Kate here! In this video, I’m cozying up after the holidays with a cup of tea and playing around with some watercolors and doodles. It’s a great way to relax and unwind after all that holiday hustle and bustle.
I’m using some new Marie’s Master’s watercolors that I recently got from Jerry’s Artarama. They’re artist’s grade watercolors, and I wanted to see how the colors behave on paper and how they blend.
I started off with some basic shapes and experimented with dropping in colors to see how they would blend together. I’m using 140 lb Bee watercolor paper, which is a thicker weight that helps to prevent buckling when using a lot of water.
Once the paint dried, I went in with a black paint marker to add some outlines and details. I love how the thick black lines complement the delicate watercolors.
Then, I used a fine liner pen to add even more lines and details. These pens are also waterproof, so I can go back in and add more watercolor later if I want to.
I also filled in some shapes for contrast, and it’s funny how I gravitate towards the same tools all the time – a fine liner pen and a black paint marker. These are definitely my favorites!
I continued the scalloped edge theme in another corner of the painting, and then added some dots throughout the piece to tie things together.
The whole thing came together pretty quickly – the painting itself took about four or five minutes, and the doodling took about 10 or 15 minutes. Once it was dry, I added some more dots and lines, playing with variations of the shapes I used earlier.
I decided the piece needed some more black, so I filled in some gaps and connected some of the shapes in the background. Finally, I broke out the white pen to add some more contrast and make the colors pop.
It turned out to be a very geometric piece, which I wasn’t expecting, but I really like it! It’s a good reminder to step outside your comfort zone and try new things. I hope you enjoyed this video and will try this at home yourself. Until next time, keep creating!
