Hey everyone, it’s Kate here! I haven’t uploaded in a few days, and I wanted to take some time to relax and create with you all. So, I grabbed my watercolors and some brushes, and thought it would be fun to doodle some leaves and circles – my favorite shapes!
Let me tell you, Thanksgiving was a peaceful one at home with turkey and good company. But after the hustle and bustle of the holidays, sometimes you just need to unwind. Art has become my saving grace. It allows me to let go and not worry so much. There are days when I have to force myself to start, but once I do, I always find myself getting lost in the process and truly enjoying it.
Today, I decided to play around with some abstract watercolors. I went with blues and purples because I love the way they blend together. It’s mesmerizing to watch the colors interact as I drop them onto the page. I also grabbed some colored pencils that I’ve been wanting to experiment with more. I love how you can create such different marks with them!
Sometimes I don’t have a specific plan in mind when I start. I just like to explore and see where the colors take me. On this first piece, I created some random, blobby shapes, leaving plenty of white space around them. I love how the blues and purples blend and texture builds up in areas where the paint dried a little unevenly.
For the second piece, I did a simple wash with the same blue and purple colors, alternating as I went down the page. I used my brush to blot off excess water at the bottom to control the flow. Then, I went in with a white pen to add some contrast, especially with the lighter purples in the center.
As I was finishing up, I decided to add one more group of leaves in the bottom corner. I love how the purples and blues blend in the background, creating a soft, almost pastel look. It’s a simple technique – just doodle some shapes and relax!
As I colored the leaves, they contrast with the cool blues in the background. It’s this kind of unexpected harmony that makes me love using colored pencils with watercolors.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable way to spend my evening. I hope you found it relaxing to watch along and maybe even doodle or paint with me! And of course, there will be more circles – you know how much I love my circles! Thanks for joining me today!
