Hey everyone! Today I’m doing a little intuitive watercolor painting. I recently got this new MeiLiang watercolor palette, and I’m itching to try it out. I’m also using a sheet of 5×7 New York Central 100% cotton cold-pressed watercolor paper. It’s actually the last sheet in the pack, but I’ve been really enjoying using it lately, so I might just keep getting this brand.
Alright, let’s get started! First, I’m going to dampen my palette and paper with some water spray. I want the paper to be quite wet before I start painting. There’s a really pretty blue color in this palette called “Turkey Blue,” and that’s what caught my eye today. It has a bit of a turquoise hue to it, and I just love it. I’m going to add some water to it and start playing around.
Next, I’m going to bring in some yellow ochre and mix it with the leftover Turkey Blue on my palette. I like the way these colors blend together. I’m adding a little more blue to create some richer areas, and then going back in with some yellow ochre and burnt sienna. I’m also dampening the paper a little more as I go.
Taking some of this mixed paint, I bring it towards the top of the page to create some color continuity. The paper is still moist, so everything blends really nicely.
Alright, I’m going to let this dry completely and be right back!
I’m back, and the painting is mostly dry – there’s just a hint of dampness left. It actually dried beautifully, and I think it could use some darker values. So, I’m going in with a second layer of watercolor before I add any doodles.
I’m grabbing my brush again and concentrating the color a bit more. I love this Turkey Blue, it’s so rich and vibrant! I’m going back over some of the areas on the bottom, spraying the paper again to reactivate the paint. It’s creating a lot of green tones, which kind of reminds me of marble.
I want to keep the extra layer subtle, but I do love that blue. I dab some of the darker color here and there, letting the paint flow and do its thing. This is a really rich color!
Just a touch more green here and there to soften some of the edges. After the painting dries, it’s time for some doodles. I recently bought some Posca pens that were on sale at Michaels, and let me tell you, they are amazing! I don’t know why I waited so long to try them.
Looking at the painting, I kind of got the idea of doing an under-the-sea theme, maybe a coral reef. We’ll see where it takes me!
Overall, I really enjoyed getting lost in this doodle! I hope you enjoyed this video, and until next time, keep creating!
