Hey everyone, it’s Kate here again with another art journal session! Today, I’m working on a fresh page, pre-painted with matte craft paint. I grabbed this awesome turquoise teal color and a new palette knife from Temu. I’ve never used these palette knives before, the wood handle isn’t even finished, but I’m excited to try it out! I’m just diving in, layering on some of this turquoise, letting the texture show through.
I’m not exactly sure where this is going yet, but I’m really digging this dark background. It’s a new experience for me, and this bright teal just pops so nicely against it. I want to incorporate some of that color into other areas, so I’m dabbing it on with the palette knife here and there, breaking up the darkness. See how it lightens everything up?
These art journal videos have been a blast! It’s been awesome starting this channel and experimenting with you guys. Hopefully it gives you some time to relax, unwind, and enjoy a little art and color.
Okay, most of the paint is dry now, so I’m coming in with a touch of orange on my brush. I’m planning an orange focal point in the middle, but for now I just want to introduce some pops of color around the page. Using my size 10 filbert brush, I’m going in really light, just a hint of that orange color.
Next, I’m grabbing another brush and some white paint. The page isn’t completely dry, so I’m going to be light-handed to avoid too much color mixing. I’m drawing a central white area, adding some texture as well. Bringing the white up the page a bit, brightening some areas from the black. You can see some of the orange peeking through, which is totally fine, as long as the white stays dominant.
Now for the focal point! I have this flower stencil, and I’m going to split it up. Two flowers on one side, three on the other. I’m using a bright orange, made by Creative Inspirations (the Jerry’s Artarama brand, which I love by the way, very affordable and great coverage). I’m adding a little white to the orange to make it more opaque on the stencil. The white also helps the orange show up better against the black background.
Positioning the stencil carefully (well, not that carefully!), I’m dabbing the paint on with my brush. I love the way the bright colors pop against the black. I’m not being too fussy, letting the texture come through. This orange is going to look fantastic against the dark background and the complementary turquoise.
Adding some paint to the flower stems with the same technique, I might get some bleed-through from the stencil, but that’s okay, I actually like that look. Of course, if you want super crisp stencil lines, you’d want to hold the stencil tighter to the paper.
Moving on to the other side of the page, I’m positioning the stencil again and grabbing some more paint. There we go! And onto the final flower. Love it!
Alright, back to the teal! I mixed up some more using sky blue, lemon yellow, and a touch of titanium white. With a brush loaded with this mixture, I’m drawing some boxes to section off some areas. They’re a little rough around the edges, but that’s the idea. Just creating some separation from the background.
Now for some doodling! The paint is still slightly damp, but not enough to cause any bleeding. Rinsing my brush and coming back in, I’m using an acrylic paint marker to doodle on the turquoise squares. Adding a big, whimsical flower that goes right outside the lines, just for fun.
The paint marker is catching on some of the texture, which I actually like! It gives it a bit of a sketchy vibe, almost like a splatter effect. I’m adding a couple more doodles in other areas to tie in that sketchy look.
Well, that’s all for today’s art journal session! Thanks so much for joining me and creating along. If you liked this video, give it a thumbs up, and if you want to see more like this, subscribe and hit that notification bell. Until next time, keep creating!
