Hey guys, it’s Kate here! So, I’m trying out this new microphone today while I work on a journal page, so bear with me if the sound isn’t perfect. I recently snagged this Sketchbook on sale at Hobby Lobby, and I’m loving it. The paper’s thin, around 80 pounds, or 130 GSM, perfect for my art journaling adventures.
I’ve been prepping some background pages using matte craft paint. It’s a neat trick to add a thin layer, which not only thickens the paper but also stops the pages from sticking together. Plus, it saves me from staring at a blank white page, you know?
Today, I’m diving into my first page. I’m starting by applying some gesso over acrylic paint to add even more texture. I’ve got these stencils on hand, and I’m thinking of adding some cool patterns. And since I’m all about experimenting, I’m using these inexpensive craft paints from Walmart. They’ve got tons of colors, so it’s easy to get creative.
I’m running into a few hiccups with thin paint, but hey, it’s all part of the process, right? I’m just enjoying the journey, trying out different colors and stencils, seeing what works and what doesn’t. Despite the mess, it’s all about having fun and getting those creative juices flowing.
Alright, so I’ve given my paper a chance to dry a bit, and now I’m coming back with some yellow paint I have on the side. I’m using it as a glaze to bring in more yellow tones. Just applying it randomly with my brush to add some texture and brightness to the page. I’m being careful not to leave too much moisture on the page, just enough for the paint to blend nicely.
Next up, I’m adding some purple to add more texture. I’m thinking of adding some doodles as focal points, maybe some circular shapes around this area. But before that, I want to tone down the background a bit more with some gesso. So, I’m dabbing a bit of gesso on my palette and working it into the page with a dry brush. It’s smoothing things out nicely while maintaining the texture.
Now that I’m happy with the background, it’s time to create some focal points. I’m thinking of making some purple circles, so I’ll use titanium white as a base to make the purple pop. Using a smaller brush, I’m carefully painting the circles, trying to get them just the right size and shape.
For a bit of variation, I’m adding some smaller yellow circles as well. These will serve as a background for my doodles. Once I’ve got the circles in place, I’ll let them dry before moving on to the next step.
Okay, now that the circles are dry, it’s time to add some doodles. I’ve got my pigment liner and jelly roll pen ready to go. I’m going to start with the purple circles and create some abstract rose-like shapes. It’s a relaxing process, almost like Zentangle, just making sure to stagger the petals and keep them looking round.
I’m waving my lines a bit to add some movement to the roses. It’s all about filling the space and connecting the edges. And there you have it, some simple doodly roses to complement the textured background. This is the part I love about art journaling, just letting the creativity flow and seeing where it takes me.
Alright, so I’ve finished up a couple more doodles over here, and I think they’re looking pretty good. Now, I’m starting another one in the middle with a little half circle and working my way around. By the way, I’m not sure if you prefer this style of video where I’m chatting as I go, or if you like the voiceover I’ve done before. Let me know your preference!
Oh, and speaking of preferences, would you like some background music with your video? I’m experimenting with it in post-processing, so you might hear some tunes in the final cut. Hopefully, it adds to the experience.
Now, onto this next doodle. I’m flipping the page upside down to make it easier to work on. Gonna pretend the center is here and start adding some petals. It’s funny how our bodies naturally want to do certain things without us even trying, like how my hand keeps wanting to make the same motions.
Alright, I’m just about done with this one. Now, onto adding some details with my Gelly Roll pen. I’m thinking of adding some white highlights to contrast with the dark purple. It’s all about experimenting and seeing what works, right?
Hmm, seems like the jelly roll pen is acting up a bit. Sometimes it flows smoothly, and other times, not so much. But hey, that’s art for you – messy and unpredictable.
Alright, let’s rotate the page and work on another doodle. This time, I’m going for a sunflower-inspired design. Gonna add some pointed petals and leave them light to complement the roses.
Adding a few black dots for contrast. Maybe they’ll draw the eye towards the roses. And hey, if a story seems familiar, blame it on my tendency to ramble. Just like my dad used to!
Alright, I think I’ll add a little sentiment with my fine liner. A simple “Joy” to bring some positivity to the page. And maybe it’ll look like a stem under the flower…or maybe not.
Well, what do you think? I’m calling this page done. It brought me some joy, and hopefully, it did the same for you. This is the first page of my new art journal, so stay tuned for more creative adventures. And don’t forget to leave a comment letting me know your thoughts on this format. Until next time, keep creating!
