I had some leftover paint on my palette, so I decided to whip up a quick background on paper. I didn’t have a specific plan in mind, so I just went with a dry brush block pattern using all the colors I had – pink, purple, green, white, and maybe even some gesso.
To tone things down a bit, I mixed some sky blue with matte medium and glazed it over everything. I skipped taping the paper down this time – I like the flexibility of moving it around as I work.
Next, I grabbed some stencils and played around with textures using gesso and some leftover sky blue paint. That’s when I decided to add some flowers! I mixed up leftover pinks, purples, and white for the petals, and squeezed in some green for the stems.
Once the flowers were painted, I went in with a black fine liner pen and a white gelly roll pen to add details and contrast. I’m a big fan of finishing things off with black and white for that extra pop.
It all started as a quick way to use up leftover paint, but I ended up with a background that I really love! It’s a good reminder that sometimes the best things come from just playing around and letting the creative flow take over.
