Simple Autumn Leaves Watercolor and Colored Pencil Shading – Earthy Colors

Hey everyone, it’s Kate here! I busted out my watercolors today because even though it’s getting close to winter, I was craving those gorgeous fall colors. I whipped up a quick and easy watercolor painting with some autumn leaves – perfect for a card or a piece of wall art. You can totally size it up if you want, but I kept it small like usual for my videos.

The beauty of this project is that it’s beginner-friendly and super fun! I used yellows, reds, browns, and greens – a classic fall palette that just screams my favorite season – not too hot, not too cold, just perfect. I wanted to keep the leaves simple, so I started with a light wash of color, layering it up a bit for some darker areas.

Here’s a tip: after the watercolor was dry, I went in with some colored pencils for that textured look I’ve been loving lately. It adds a whole new dimension to the piece! I used brown around the leaves and towards the bottom to create depth where the stems would eventually be. Speaking of stems, I just used a fine brush with a light brown wash to add them after the leaves were in place, making it way easier to control where they went.

This is a really adaptable project – you can make it as simple or detailed as you want.

This whole project was all about experimentation, and I’m so happy with how it turned out! Just play around with your supplies and have fun! The entire process, besides drying time, was super quick. I used a variety of colors while still maintaining a muted palette, and everything blended beautifully. I even added some yellow highlights around the red circles for an extra touch.

Overall, I think this would make a really cute card. You could stamp a sentiment on it, depending on how you arrange your leaves, or leave space for a handwritten message. I hope you enjoyed watching this tutorial and maybe even painting along with me! Thanks so much for watching and interacting with my channel. Until next time, keep creating!
