Hey guys, it’s Kate! Hope your day’s going awesome. Today, I’m diving into some fun collage work with pieces I made earlier. You can snag these designs for free here. Just print, cut, and use to your heart’s content!
I have my pre-painted background with matte craft paint, and I’m laying going over it with a giant Posca pen to make bold marks. The deep black gives great coverage, perfect for high contrast mark-making. Then, switching to a smaller marker, I’m adding script-like doodles for an extra bit of texture. The idea is that when everything is covered later and more layers are added, you can still see some of the background poking through. It’s almost like little surprises on the page.
With the background set, I’m introducing some light. A dollop of titanium white, spread thinly with a silicone brush, brightens everything up. To add some similar color as I used in the original elements, I mixed colors using phthalo blue and sap green, and I’m creating organic shapes with brushes and a textured palette knife.
Next, I added a little warmth with a peachy tint. The shapes from the bubble stencil added a subtle contrast of warm over all of the cool colors.
Time to bring it all together! I glued down my collage pieces with craft glue, but you can use any type of glue you have on hand, and even gesso works (just be careful if you’re using white and don’t want it to show).
Hope you enjoyed this creative journey as much as I did! Until next time, keep those creative juices flowing.
