Intuitive Art Abstract Acrylic Painting and Fun Mark Making

Hey everyone, it’s Kate! So, in this video, I’m diving into another mixed media adventure, creating an intuitive art piece that’s part painting, part drawing, and all fun. I’ve got my acrylics, markers, and brushes ready to go, and I’m excited to take you along for the ride.

First things first, I’m working on this mixed media paper I snagged from Hobby Lobby. It’s sturdy and holds up well to all the layers I’m about to throw at it. After prepping the paper with a thin coat of gesso, I dive right in, making marks without a plan, just letting my instincts guide me. Gel sticks, acrylic inks, and fluid acrylics all come into play, adding depth and texture to the paper.

One of my favorite colors to work with is this gorgeous turquoise from Golden fluid acrylics. It’s transparent, so you can still see the marks underneath. I’m all for experimenting with different tools and techniques, like using a fan brush for those bold lines and shapes.

I find myself drawn to geometric shapes and patterns, a recurring theme in my work. It’s so satisfying layering colors and textures, watching the painting change with every new addition. And while I might not always have a clear vision of where the painting is headed, that’s part of the fun – letting it unfold organically.

Adding contrast is key, so I play around with darker tones like burnt sienna and browns to balance out the bright colors. And when it comes to stencils, I’m a big fan of making my own. It’s an effective way to add interest and texture to the piece.

As I near the finishing stages, I ultimately decide to bring back some warmth with splashes of yellow ochre.

And of course, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as peeling off the tape to reveal those crisp, clean edges.

I hope this video inspires you to keep those brushes moving! Until next time, keep creating!
