Expressive Fall Art Journaling Acrylics, Stencils, and Sentiment - Easy Tutorial

Hey there, it’s Kate! So, let me tell you about my latest art journaling adventure. You know, sometimes getting everything just right in these videos can be a real struggle. I mean, I just finished recording a voiceover, only to realize later that I sounded terrible because I accidentally recorded using my laptop microphone! But hey, mistakes happen, right? Anyway, today I’m super excited to dive into another mini art journal spread with you all, and since fall is in the air, I thought, why not go for an autumn theme?

So, I start off with my mini sketchbook. The pages are thin, so I like to slap on a quick layer of gesso to beef them up a bit. But, I’ll admit, I sometimes get a little impatient and end up painting over it before it’s dry. Oops! But hey, that’s just part of the creative process, right? And speaking of supplies, I’m using these awesome Creative Inspirations paints I snagged from Jerry’s online.

Now, as I’m painting away, I can’t help but reflect on how far I’ve come in my art journaling journey. It’s been a couple of years of sporadic practice, but I’ve definitely seen improvement. Sure, there have been some messy mishaps along the way, but each one has been a valuable learning experience. And isn’t that what art is all about? Embracing the messy, unpredictable journey?

And about color mixing. It used to intimidate me, but now I just dive right in and see what happens. There’s something so satisfying about creating your own custom shades and seeing how they come together on the page. Plus, it gives me a boost of confidence knowing I can mix up whatever I need. If you’re afraid to mix colors, don’t be! Even neutrals are beautiful, and so is mud. The more experiment, the more you’ll build confidence to just dive in.

As I wrap up this spread, I can’t help but add a few extra touches here and there. A splash of color, a dab of white for highlights—it’s those little details that really make the page come alive. And despite the time flying by (seriously, where does it all go?), I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I just hope my videos aren’t too long for anyone’s liking! But hey, if you’re enjoying the journey with me, then I’m happy to keep creating and sharing.

So, until next time, keep creating, keep experimenting, and most importantly, keep having fun with it all.
