Hey guys, it’s Kate, and I’m here with another video today, featuring an art journal page. I’ve got this mini journal that I’m working on, and I’m starting off by spreading some gesso on the pages to protect them. Since I’ll be using fluid acrylics and water on the page, I want to make sure the paper is well-protected. Gesso not only protects the page but also helps control buckling and makes the paper more sturdy.
Today, I’ll be using some Amsterdam inks and Golden fluid acrylics. For the acrylics, I’m using phthalo turquoise and quinacridone magenta, while for the inks, I’ve chosen Naples yellow deep and burnt sienna. I also picked up some new stencils on Amazon, including some greenery and butterfly stencils, so I’m excited to give them a try.
I like to use the mini journal for trying out new products because it’s faster and lets me experiment without committing to a larger page. Today, I’m starting with some stamps over the gesso before adding any acrylics or inks. I’m using Ranger archival ink, which is great because it doesn’t smudge after drying, allowing the stamped images to stay crisp.
Next, I’ll be adding some color with the acrylics and inks. I’m going for a messy, watercolor-like look, especially with the flowers and butterflies. I’m mixing the colors on the palette to create some variety and depth in the petals and wings.
I also experimented with adding some darker shades around the edges to give the page a vintage look and frame the composition a bit. Overall, I’m enjoying the process of layering colors and textures to create an interesting visual story on the page.
I hope you enjoyed watching this quick video today, and until next time, keep creating!
